Entrepreneur Motivation Podcast: Season 4 Episode 3 – Jeff Bezos

Today I want to share the story of Jeff Bezos, the Founder and CEO of Amazon. I’m extremely inspired by Jeff and his story.  It’s truly inspirational to see how he started with humble beginnings and has taken the company so far.

Amazon has taken over and as a Supply Chain Major, I am completely amazed at what they have accomplished from warehousing to logistics and distribution.

He boasts a net worth of $141.5 billion dollars but I’ve heard he still does his dishes when he goes home. This is random but please watch this hilarious compilation video of Jeff laughing… he has one of the funniest laughs I’ve ever heard.

Learn to Say “NO” and Focus On What Really Matters

We live in a busy world

There’s always a million things going on and the to-do list seems to grow longer by the second. With so many “urgent” and “important” things to do, it can be very difficult to say the word “no.” Maybe it’s a family member who wants you to drop him to the airport in rush hour traffic. Or perhaps it’s a boss who always tells you she needs something ASAP at 4:59pm on Friday as you’re about to drive out of town.

We tend to be people-pleasers. We often find it hard to say no to requests and find ourselves spending time or money on things we should have passed on. This is why I want to teach you how to say no.

Don’t be a “yes-man”

What is a yes-man? A yes-man (I guess you could also say yes-woman, to be fair) according to Merriam-Webster, is a person who agrees with everything that is said; especially : one who endorses or supports without criticism every opinion or proposal of an associate or superior. You might think that taking care of everything your boss wants done will make him or her happy, but being the go-to for every request will only make your situation worse.

When you say yes to every request thrown your way, you begin to take on too much. You start to waste time on things that really aren’t urgent OR important. One of the biggest kickers is that you might rush to finish a request and send it on to the next person. Then that person might sit on that information for several days before doing anything with it. In that scenario, you end up wasting all this time scrambling to do work just to have nothing happen. Can you think of a time or two that this happened? Are you a little annoyed remembering all the time you wasted? I’ve been there, too.

How to say no

When someone approaches you with an unreasonable request or even tries to sell you something you don’t really want or need, you need to be strong in your response. Don’t reply with “I can’t” or “I’m not sure.” Have a firm response like “I’m not interested in that product” or “I’m not able to help you with that.” This may be awkward at first, but I promise it gets easier and that it is extremely empowering.

When you say no to something that is going to waste your time or money, you are in the driver’s seat. You have full control of the situation. The people who are spending hours on things that are not adding value or have a bunch of junk in their garage that they were sold were unable to say no. They perhaps started with “I’m not sure” or “maybe later.” Then they were sold. They were pressured until they caved and said “sure, I can take care of that for you” or “okay, I’ll go ahead and buy that random mall kiosk toy that I’ll never use.”

When you cave in and take on something you know you don’t need or want, you’re stuck. It’s much harder to back out of something once you committed. But don’t be afraid to back out if you realize you need to. Tell someone you underestimated how long a task would take or that you’re really not able to take time away from your other priorities. Stress the limited time you have and that you can’t afford to let your priorities suffer by allowing distractions into your life.

So go out today and practice saying “no.” Get past the initial awkward feeling and you’ll be so happy you did. Your productivity will skyrocket when you stay focused on the things that really matter.

The Power of Affirmations – I CAN, I WILL, I MUST

Positive affirmations are very important in accomplishing any goals you set for yourself. Belief that you can do something is the prerequisite to accomplishing it. Like the Henry Ford quote goes, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

So, what exactly is an affirmation?

An affirmation is a carefully formatted statement that should be repeated to one’s self and written down frequently.

If you’ve heard of the Law of Attraction, you must visualize the outcome you want and attract it into your life. If you think positively, you’ll attract positive things. Alternatively, the same goes for negative thoughts. Ever wonder why negative people you know always seem to have something new to complain about? You attract your thoughts into reality, so guard them and make sure they’re aligned with what you want in life.

In some meditations I’ve done recently, positive affirmations such as “I will smile today” or “I am content” are mentioned. You are supposed to either say the words out loud or think them in your head. There is so much power in actually following through with this exercise, as silly as you might think it seems.

I do push-ups every morning with a motivational YouTube video playing in the background. I watch some of the same videos multiple times, but I try to get fresh content and watch new videos every day.

The video below was one I watched recently. Eric Thomas repeats the phrase “I CAN, I WILL, I MUST” over and over, and in the audio you can hear the audience saying it with him. This seriously sent chills down my spine in the middle of my push-ups…. I CAN. I WILL. I MUST.

Think about how powerful that statement is:

I CAN It is possible, it CAN be done, and I CAN do it.

I WILL I WILL get it done. Not “I hope I can” or “I might.” WILL means it IS going to happen.

I MUST I MUST do this. It absolutely HAS to be done, no excuses.

What excuses do you have right now as to why you aren’t living the life of your dreams? Shed those and start repeating this mantra over and over again, every single morning, or any time you feel like giving up. Believe you can and you will. Take action and have 100% belief that your dreams are on their way to reality. Then watch as they unfold before your eyes.

“I CAN. I WILL. I MUST.”  –Eric Thomas

Book Recommendation: Be Obsessed or Be Average by Grant Cardone

I’m currently listening to “Be Obsessed or Be Average” on Audible by Grant Cardone and am absolutely loving it. I constantly rewind segments of it to share on my Snapchat and Instagram stories just so others can take away the message and get a good laugh.

Some of my favorite lines so far

One line I found hilarious but true was when Grant was talking about taking big action to make things happen. He says moving away from home is one way to step out of your comfort zone. “Maybe it’s time to leave momma” (he says “momma” in a baby voice where it’s pronounced “mahhh-mahh).

Another line that cracked me up was when he was saying someone reached out to him telling him he’s spending too much money or something. Grant replies with something along the lines of “I left my lights on back at home all day, since you’re concerned with me spending money. And I left my car running for the last hour. I live in Miami, and I want it to be cool when I get inside, ya know what I’m sayin’? I’m not afraid of wasting money brotha, because I’m not a little baby!”

This type of thinking ties in with my recent post focusing on abundance versus scarcity thinking. Focus on generating more money instead of trying to save a few pennies.

You can order Grant Cardone posters here

Change your mindset about money

There’s tons of truth bombs in this book overall and I highly recommend it. Grant teaches you how to properly think about money. Unlike many people who say money isn’t everything or isn’t important, Grant mentions that yes, it is important.

At the end of the day, money really does solve tons of problems. If you want to donate to charities, you need money. Yes, you can also donate time, but you can only do so much as an individual. By increasing your money, you can donate in ways that scale. And let’s not forget that bills require this thing called money. The lights don’t stay on by themselves.

Some people think that money isn’t important, and that life is just about the simple, free things. If that’s the case, why are these people working a full-time job? Clearly, there IS a need for money. Money = freedom to live how you want and with purpose. Once you attain this type of freedom, you no longer need to work a job you don’t like or do things to earn money that you don’t want to do. You can spend your time and money on things that truly interest and inspire you.

We all have 24 hours in a day

Right now, there are people flipping burgers at McDonald’s being paid minimum wage. At the same time, there are millionaires flying their jet to a nice island and spending a week relaxing. We all have 24 hours in a day. How we make use of that time determines where we end up. When you get home from work, do you flip the TV on for 4 hours, or do you continue working to achieve the life you’ve always dreamed of?

The path to financial freedom

The goal is obviously to increase your income and decrease your expenses to truly maximize profits. Rich Dad, Poor Dad defines wealth as the number of days you can survive without physically working (or anyone in your household physically working) and still maintain your standard of living. As you start making more money, don’t just increase your spending on things that aren’t important. For example, don’t blow your money on bottle service as soon as you start making a little more. Invest that extra money into things like real estate or assets that will pay you back “10X” like Grant would say.

One of the main takeaways of this book (and the title reflects it) is that if you are not obsessed, you will be average. To be successful at anything, you must be truly obsessed. I’m obsessed with success and am doing everything I can to knock out my goals. Are you?

Review your goals and 10X them. Want to make $1M? Set your goal to $10M. Think BIGGER and take massive action. Get a physical copy of the book today on Amazon or the audio version on Audible.

Be obsessed, or be average!

Entrepreneur Motivation Podcast: Season 3 Episode 8 – Masters of Scale (Reid Hoffman)

This week, I want to introduce you to Reid Hoffman’s podcast, Masters of Scale. Reid covers how companies grow from 0 to a gazillion and tests theories with legendary leaders.
